Digital Society is a recognized International Baccalaureate (IB) course. The new Diploma Programme (DP) Digital Society course was launched in 2022, with assessment taking place in May 2024. This course is replacing the former Information Technology in a Global Society (ITGS) subject. Digital Society is driven by a student-centered flexible curriculum model that integrates concepts, content and context through inquiry. Teachers and students are encouraged to let their interests and passions guide their way through the course.

Digital Society has Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) versions defined by International Baccalaureate with a technical breakdown of the curriculum and assessment methods for this course in the Digital Society Subject Brief (SL&HL).

Subject topics in Digital Society I are open-ended rather than limited and can evolve according to new developments, examples, and emerging technologies. This new subject is adaptable to teacher and student interest allowing for “big ideas.” Digital Society I invites students and teachers to work together to explore the challenges and changes faced today in technology, media, ethics and policy through conceptual and contextual lenses. 

Contextual instruction and student participation in co-curricular career and technical student organization (CTSO) activities will develop leadership, interpersonal, and career skills. High-quality work-based learning (HQWBL) will provide experiential learning opportunities related to students' career goals and/or interests, integrated with instruction, and performed in partnership with local businesses and organizations.

IB course curricula is available only to IB-identified schools. IB teachers can access them from programme communities within My IB (https://internationalbaccalaureate.force.com/ibportal/IBPortalLogin?lang=en_US).

Notes

IB accommodates the needs of all students with disabilities enrolled in an IB course. Students take written examinations at the end of their IB Diploma Programme courses that follow the IB-provided curriculum for each course. The exam name is the same as the IB course and is scored by external IB examiners. No CTE courses prepare the student for the IB examination.

Course Sequences

A combination of this course and those below, equivalent to two 36-week courses, is a concentration sequence. Students wishing to complete a specialization may take additional courses based on their career pathways. A program completer is a student who has met the requirements for a CTE concentration sequence and all other requirements for high school graduation or an approved alternative education program.

Virginia’s High Demand Occupations and Apprenticeable Occupations

Section § 2.2-2472 of the Code of Virginia requires the Virginia Board of Workforce Development (VBWD) to publish a list of jobs, trades, and professions for which a high demand for qualified workers exists or is projected.  The Virginia Office of Education Economics (VOEE) collaborated with the VBWD and related stakeholders to develop the high demand occupations list.
